The credentialing body uses RD and RDN for the same registration: its examination handbook is titled RD and its definition of terms is titled RDN. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A registered dietitian nutritionist is a credentialed food and nutrition expert who works out what a person&#8217;s body actually needs, builds an eating plan around the food that person really has, and helps them keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"job\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.801), 1.6rem);\">What the job is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#4f6a24;font-size:0.8rem;letter-spacing:0.12em\"><strong>Day to day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assesses a person&#8217;s nutritional needs, diet restrictions and current health plan, then writes a dietary care plan, which is the written set of food and nutrition steps for that one person. [2]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluates laboratory test results, which means reading blood work such as glucose and cholesterol, before making nutrition recommendations. [2]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counsels individuals and groups on nutrition and healthy eating habits, and advises patients and their families on dietary plans, food selection and food preparation. Nationally in 2025 the largest employer was hospitals. CDR requires a graduate degree for anyone establishing examination eligibility on or after January 1, 2024, and its definition of the credential names a master&#8217;s degree. [1] [6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#4f6a24;font-size:0.8rem;letter-spacing:0.12em\"><strong>Regulator<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None. California operates no board for dietitians. The credential is granted and maintained by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, a national credentialing agency, not a state board. [1] [7]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#4f6a24;font-size:0.8rem;letter-spacing:0.12em\"><strong>Licensed in California<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. California issues no dietitian license. State law protects the titles dietitian, registered dietitian, registered dietitian nutritionist, RD, RDN and DTR, and reserves medical nutrition therapy in licensed facilities and private offices, on a provider&#8217;s referral, to registered dietitians and similarly qualified nutrition professionals. The credential is national; the title protection is state; neither one is a license. [7] [8] [9]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#4f6a24;font-size:0.8rem;letter-spacing:0.12em\"><strong>What it takes to enter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A graduate degree from a USDE-accredited institution, plus an ACEND-accredited route with at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice or experiential learning, in one of four forms: a Didactic Program in Dietetics plus a Dietetic Internship, a Coordinated Program, a Graduate Program, or a doctorate plus an accredited individualized pathway. Then the Registration Examination for Dietitians. [6] [10] [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">California&#8217;s own title law still sets a lower floor for who may use the title, a bachelor&#8217;s degree or higher plus at least 900 supervised hours. That floor is not the route to the credential. A student plans against CDR and ACEND, which produce the credential; the state law governs the title. In a California hospital or clinic the dietitian works from a provider&#8217;s referral that names the diagnosis. Within that referral the dietitian does make the nutrition diagnosis, which is the second step of the Nutrition Care Process, does individualize the diet within the diet order, does evaluate laboratory results, and with privileges or physician-delegated orders does order or recommend therapeutic diets and nutrition-related tests.
