Dental Assistant or Dental Hygienist?

Both work with dentists and patients. They are two different careers with two different paths, and one does not turn into the other.

What each one does

  • Dental assistant. Helps the dentist, gets the patient and the equipment ready, and keeps records. [1]
  • Dental hygienist. Gives patients oral hygiene care, checks each patient’s oral hygiene needs, keeps health records, and teaches people how to keep their mouths healthy and prevent disease. [2]

Side by side

Dental assistant

Who directs the work

A licensed dentist, who stays responsible for every task the assistant does. [3]

License

You can start without one, but California law requires certain courses before an assistant does basic tasks with patients. [3] A license, registered dental assistant (RDA), opens more duties, such as sealants. [4]

How you get in

Training on the job, plus the required courses. [1] [3]

Pay in California, May 2025

Median $24.09 an hour. The middle half earn $22.25 to $29.17. [5]

Dental hygienist

Who directs the work

State law sets which duties a hygienist may do, how closely a dentist supervises, and where the work can happen. [6]

License

Required. In California, you cannot practice dental hygiene without a registered dental hygienist (RDH) license. [6]

How you get in

Finish an accredited dental hygiene program, pass the national dental hygiene exam, earn radiation safety and basic life support certificates, submit fingerprints for a background check, and pass California’s law and ethics exam. [6]

Pay in California, May 2025

Median $60.06 an hour. The middle half earn $52.76 to $63.52. [5]

Can I start as an assistant and move up to hygienist?

Not as a shortcut. California’s hygiene license asks for a diploma from an accredited dental hygiene program, plus the exams and certificates above. [6] Work as a dental assistant is not on that list, so it cannot stand in for the program. The state’s dental board does list a shortcut that runs the other way: a licensed hygienist can qualify for the registered dental assistant license after passing that license’s exam. [4]

Why starting as an assistant can still help

It can be a way to learn how to talk with patients and to find out whether you like dental work before you apply to a hygiene program.

Taking dental assisting in high school?

It can count. One of California’s paths to the registered dental assistant license pairs a dental assisting program, such as one at a high school or a regional occupational program, with work experience. Together they must add up to at least 15 months and 1,280 hours. You also finish the courses the dental board requires (radiation safety, coronal polishing, pit and fissure sealants, infection control, and the California Dental Practice Act), keep a current basic life support certificate, and pass the license exam. [4]

How long it takes
  • Dental assistant. Employers usually expect 1 to 12 months of on-the-job training. [1]
  • Dental hygienist. It depends on the program. California’s dental hygiene board lists approved programs across the state, at community colleges, private colleges, and universities. [7] Plan for two parts. First, you take college courses before you apply. These include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and English composition. A program may set a minimum grade for each. [8] [10] Then, once you are admitted, the program takes two years of full-time study at several California community colleges. [9] [11] [12] Programs pick students in different ways, such as a lottery, a waiting list, or points. So getting in can add time before you start. [8] [10] [11]
What the pay figures mean

Median means half of California’s workers in that job earn more and half earn less. The middle half is everyone between the 25th and the 75th percentile. These are statewide figures for May 2025. [5]
